Rotala 'Bonsai' (Rotala indica 'Bonsai') is a compact and slow-growing stem plant prized for its miniature form and neatly layered, rounded leaves. Despite its name, it is not a true dwarf of Rotala rotundifolia, but rather a compact cultivar of Rotala indica. Its small size and highly structured growth habit make it ideal for nano tanks, foreground to midground detailing, and Dutch-style aquascapes where geometric plant shapes and tight trimming are emphasized.
In aquascaping, Rotala 'Bonsai' offers exceptional control and refinement. It grows vertically in a dense, bushy manner, with tiny, coin-like leaves arranged in an orderly pattern along its rigid stems. With frequent trimming and proper lighting, it can be shaped into compact hedges or mounds, making it perfect for precision scaping. Its color ranges from bright green to coppery tones at the tops when grown under strong lighting and with good nutrient availability.
This plant thrives under medium to high lighting and performs best with CO₂ injection, which promotes tighter internodes and stronger growth. It requires a nutrient-rich substrate and consistent macro/micronutrient dosing. While it is slower to grow than many other Rotala species, its growth is highly predictable, making it easy to shape and maintain.
Propagation is simple via stem cuttings—trim and replant the tops to encourage fuller, carpet-like coverage. Avoid letting the plant shade itself or grow too tall, as the lower portions may weaken.
