Hygrophila ringens 'Apple Red'

Hygrophila ringens 'Apple Red' (also sold as Hygrophila quadrivalvis 'Apple Red') is a striking stem plant with broad, strongly veined leaves and rich red stems. Under moderate conditions it may show green-to-bronze foliage, while stronger light, stable CO₂, and balanced nutrition bring out the cultivar’s vivid apple-red to warm rose-red color.

Its upright growth and larger leaves make it an excellent midground or background focal plant. Regular trimming encourages side shoots and creates a fuller, bushier group. Replant healthy cut tops to expand the stand.

For the strongest apple-red foliage, provide stable CO₂, good circulation, adequate iron and micronutrients, and enough nitrogen and phosphorus to support healthy growth. Avoid stripping nutrients in an attempt to force color, as this can cause weak or damaged leaves.

Planting: Separate the stems and plant them individually with a little space between each stem. Remove any damaged lower leaves before planting and keep the lower nodes above the substrate.

Live plants may arrive with some emersed-grown or shipment foliage. Color and leaf form can change as the plant adapts to submerged aquarium growth.
