Hygrophila araguaia 'Chai' is a delicate and rare cultivar of the Hygrophila genus, admired for its petite stature and soft pink to peach-toned foliage. A mutation or selection of Hygrophila sp. 'Araguaia', this variant—popularized under the name ‘Chai’ for its gentle, milky coloration—adds a subtle, pastel touch to aquascapes. Its slow, creeping growth and compact form make it ideal for detailed layout work and nano aquariums.

In aquascaping, Hygrophila 'Chai' is best used in the foreground or midground, where its unique color can contrast softly against green or red plants. Under high lighting and with CO₂ supplementation, its leaves exhibit the best pigmentation, shifting from pale cream-pink to soft coral tones. Its compact rosette-like growth helps maintain a low profile, making it a popular choice for Dutch-style and nature-style aquariums that emphasize color layering and plant form.

This plant thrives under high light and benefits from stable, nutrient-rich conditions. CO₂ injection is strongly recommended to maintain its compact form and coloration. Unlike faster-growing Hygrophila species, 'Chai' grows slowly and requires patience but rewards the aquascaper with a gentle, luminous presence in the layout.

Due to its delicate growth and pastel coloring, it is somewhat sensitive to algae and nutrient imbalances. Regular dosing with micronutrients and a balanced water column fertilization routine help sustain healthy growth and coloration. Trimming is minimal, but occasional topping and replanting promote bushier development.
