Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green Gecko’ is a captivating and rare cultivar of the Cryptocoryne wendtii species, distinguished by its vivid, bright green leaves with a slight iridescent sheen and characteristic gecko-like speckling or mottling. The “true” Green Gecko variety stands out for its vibrant coloration and slightly undulated leaf edges, offering a unique twist on the more commonly seen green Crypts. Originating from cultivated lines, this plant is a prized choice for collectors and aquascapers seeking uncommon, yet reliable, foreground to midground flora.

In aquascaping, Cryptocoryne wendtii ‘Green Gecko’ is ideal for creating lush, textured clusters in the midground or as a foreground focal plant in larger tanks. Its compact rosette form and moderate growth rate make it easy to maintain, while its bold green coloration provides contrast against darker substrates or red-leaved plants. Like many Crypts, it adapts well to a wide range of conditions but thrives with stability and a nutrient-rich substrate.

This variety prefers moderate lighting and benefits greatly from root feeding. CO₂ injection is optional but will promote more robust growth and faster establishment. After planting, it may undergo a temporary melting phase—a common trait in Crypts—but will recover and develop new, healthy foliage once acclimated.

Regular maintenance is minimal, usually involving trimming of older leaves to encourage fresh growth. With time, it forms dense clumps through underground runners, creating a carpet-like effect if left undisturbed.

Care Tips:

  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich substrate or use root tabs for optimal root health.

  • Lighting: Low to moderate; too much light may encourage algae on slow-growing leaves.

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Nutrients: Medium; prefers root feeding but benefits from occasional water column dosing.

  • Propagation: Spreads via runners; daughter plants can be separated and replanted.
