Bucephalandra 'Pygmy' is a rare and compact variant introduced by the Sreepadma Growow collection, celebrated for its ultra-miniature size and dense growth habit. This cultivar is ideal for nano aquariums and precision aquascaping, featuring tight rosettes of small, oval leaves that range from deep green to subtle metallic hues under optimal lighting. Its petite stature and slow growth make it a perfect candidate for intricate layout details and high-definition aquascapes.

In aquascaping, Bucephalandra 'Pygmy' excels when attached to hardscape such as fine driftwood, lava rock, or aquascaping stones, creating the effect of moss-like coverage with added texture and richness. This variant is especially suited for the foreground or accenting crevices in midground structures. Under stable and nutrient-rich conditions, its leaves can exhibit a shimmering effect, contributing to the depth and vibrancy of the layout.

The plant thrives in low to moderate lighting, and while CO₂ injection is not essential, it will accelerate growth and enhance coloration. Bucephalandra 'Pygmy' prefers clean, stable water parameters and is sensitive to algae buildup due to its slow growth rate. It does well in soft, acidic to neutral water and can flourish with regular dosing of micronutrient-rich fertilizers.

Given its size and delicate growth habit, maintenance is minimal, with occasional trimming or rhizome division needed to control spread. Care must be taken during planting to avoid burying the rhizome, which can cause decay.

Care Tips:

  • Substrate: Not necessary; attach to rocks or driftwood. Keep rhizome exposed.

  • Lighting: Low to moderate; too much light may promote algae.

  • Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)

  • pH: 6.0–7.5

  • Nutrients: Low to medium; benefits from regular liquid fertilization.

  • Propagation: Rhizome division with multiple leaves for healthy regrowth.
