Ammannia sp. 'Bonsai' is a compact stem plant prized for its small, neatly arranged leaves and dense, architectural growth. Often sold in the aquarium trade under the familiar “Bonsai” name, it develops a tidy shrub-like form with green to warm bronze coloration under stronger light. Its controlled growth makes it an excellent foreground or midground accent, especially in Dutch-style and nano aquascapes.

This bunched offering provides multiple stems that can be separated and planted individually. Spacing the stems slightly apart gives light and water flow to the lower leaves and encourages a fuller group as the plants establish.

Care Guide

  • Care level: Intermediate
  • Growth rate: Slow to moderate
  • Placement: Foreground to midground
  • Lighting: Moderate to high
  • CO₂: Recommended for compact, healthy growth
  • Temperature: 68–82°F (20–28°C)
  • pH: 5.0–7.5
  • Substrate: Nutrient-rich aquasoil or an enriched substrate
  • Nutrients: Consistent macro- and micronutrient fertilization
  • Propagation: Trim healthy tops and replant the cuttings

Planting Instructions

Remove the wrapping, separate the stems, and plant them individually with tweezers. Regular trimming promotes branching and maintains a low, compact mound. Stable CO₂, good circulation, and balanced fertilization help prevent weak or sparse lower growth.

Live plants naturally vary in size, shape, and coloration. The plant received may differ slightly from representative photos.
