Aglaonema simplex is a hardy, shade-tolerant aquatic-terrestrial plant known for its elongated, lance-shaped green leaves and its adaptability to low-light, humid environments. Native to Southeast Asia, this species is often found in swampy, shaded habitats and is commonly used in paludariums, ripariums, and the emersed zones of aquascapes. Though not as ornamental as some of its variegated cousins, Aglaonema simplex is prized for its resilience, lush greenery, and ability to thrive in transitional setups.

In aquascaping and vivarium design, Aglaonema simplex is best used in emersed conditions, such as along the margins of shallow aquariums, in wabi-kusa setups, or in high-humidity terrariums. Its elegant foliage provides vertical structure and a lush, tropical aesthetic. While it can tolerate brief submersion, long-term underwater growth is not ideal, as it prefers roots in water and leaves above the surface.

This plant thrives in low to moderate lighting and requires consistently high humidity (above 70%) for best growth. It does not require CO₂ supplementation in emersed culture but benefits from nutrient-rich substrates and occasional foliar misting or fertilization. It’s extremely beginner-friendly and can survive a wide range of water parameters.

Maintenance is minimal. Prune older or damaged leaves as needed, and ensure good air circulation to prevent mold or fungal issues in high-humidity setups.

Care Tips:

  • Substrate: Moist, nutrient-rich soil or semi-submerged in riparium setups.

  • Lighting: Low to moderate; avoid direct sunlight.

  • Temperature: 22–30°C (72–86°F)

  • pH: 5.5–7.5

  • Nutrients: Low to medium; occasional root or foliar feeding enhances growth.

  • Propagation: Division or stem cuttings in high humidity; roots easily in moist conditions.
